National Volunteer Week:

"Celebrating People in Action"

The theme for National Volunteer Week, April 19-25, "Celebrating People in Action," honors those who dedicate themselves to taking action and solving problems in their communities. As characterized by the Points of Light Institute, this week "presents an opportunity for individuals, families, nonprofit organizations and government entities alike to celebrate the ordinary people who accomplish extraordinary things through service." In our six-town newspaper coverage area, we see many groups and individuals who help out in very public and very private ways. In our churches and social organizations, there are always people who are ready to help with whatever the local cause may be or take on a project to help those in faraway places. Some volunteers receive recognition, while others never find themselves in the spotlight. Most volunteers will tell you they get far more from their volunteer experiences than they give. Rewards may come in plaques or certificates or flowers, but the most cherished are the heartfelt thanks of those whose lives they have touched. During these troubled economic times, those who find themselves without work or without a job may find some comfort in donating their time and skills to a worthwhile organization. It’s a great way to regain a sense of purpose and restore confidence in ourselves and our abilities. To all those who take action to make their communities a better place to live, we say "thank you." - Paula Gibbs

Who stole the bench?

Dear Editor:

To the yahoos who removed the park bench identified with the big red "W" painted on it at Heal Cove on West Shore Road would you please return it?

The bench was there for all to sit and enjoy the view. If you need one for yourself, please leave a note and I will have a gift card for you at Ames Supply where you can have one of your own.

Thanks,

Mike Muchmore
