'Misunderstood' bats are topic of Midcoast Conservancy talk
Join Midcoast Conservancy on Tuesday, June 20 from 6-7:30 p.m. for an introduction to one of the planet’s most fascinating creatures: the bat! Bats are perhaps the most misunderstood and under-appreciated creatures on the planet. They are also among the most unique, playing an essential role in the ecology of our planet and saving US agriculture billions of dollars each year.
In this lively presentation, Annie Kassler of Maine Bat Education will open participants’ eyes to the truth about bats and why they should care about them.
"I became fascinated with bats years ago, and once I learned a little bit, I wanted to learn everything. And then I wanted to tell everyone. It turns out that bats are amazing,” Kassler said.
She will also debunk persistent myths, demonstrate how to move a stray bat from a house and provide the latest update on White Nose Syndrome, a disease which has devastated bat populations in Maine and all of eastern North America.
Kassler is a speaker with Bat Conservation International and a member of the White Nose Syndrome Communications Group, the Northeast Bat Working Group and the Maine Bat Working Group. Her presentation and slide show have received rave reviews throughout Maine. The class will meet at the Midcoast Conservancy office at 36 Water Street in Wiscasset.
