Wiscasset renames Redskin’s Drive ‘Micmac Drive’
Redskin’s Drive is no more in Wiscasset.
In a 4-0 vote on Oct. 7, selectmen changed the name of the private drive off Bradford Road to Micmac Drive, honoring the heritage of the road’s residents and ending a brief but controversial run for the road’s first name.
Asked after Tuesday night’s meeting how she felt about the vote’s outcome, Sara Harvey, who is building a home on the road, said: “Relieved.”
Prior to the vote, Selectmen’s Chairman Pam Dunning, who had opposed the name Redskin’s Drive, cited a news report in which a Micmac chief expressed support for the proposed change to Micmac Drive.
“I think it’s a lovely way to show respect for (the residents’) ancestors,” Dunning said.
Harvey told the board she has Micmac heritage on her father’s side. The change to Micmac Drive would be beneficial to everyone, she said.
Harvey, Michael Harvey and Jeff Fortier proposed the name change in a Sept. 23 letter to the town.
“To avoid further conflict or potential lawsuits with the Indian tribes in the state, we give our consent,” the letter states.
Other than saying she was relieved, Sara Harvey on Tuesday declined to discuss the matter. The letter speaks for itself, she said.
The residents’ letter followed one that selectmen got from the chief of the Penobscot tribe, calling the first name extremely offensive and calling for its removal; former selectman Judy Flanagan on Sept. 2 told the board the decision was disappointing and discouraging.
The issue also spawned letters to the editor that were critical of the road name.
Selectmen on Tuesday took two votes to complete the change. The first was a vote to reconsider the board’s Aug. 19 decision approving Redskin’s Drive. The motion came from Board Vice Chairman Ben Rines Jr., who had made the August motion for Redskin’s Drive. The name had topped the road’s residents’ list of proposed names. Rines cited the residents’ new offer as he made Tuesday’s motion.
Selectman Jeff Slack offered to second Rines’ motion, but Dunning told him he couldn’t because he had abstained from the August vote. Then Selectman Bill Barnes, who had supported Redskin’s Drive along with Rines and Selectman Tim Merry, seconded it. The motion passed unopposed. Merry was not at the meeting.
The second vote, to change the name to Micmac Drive, passed 4-0.
Selectmen dedicated Tuesday’s meeting to former board member William “Bill” Curtis, who died Oct. 3.
