A Wiscasset man died and a Boothbay teen was in critical condition at a Portland hospital following an accident on Route 1 in Woolwich on February 11, authorities said.

Walter Crosman, 45, died at the scene of the crash that occurred at about 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, near George Wright Road, Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Deputy Mark Anderson said. Crosman was driving northbound in his 1997 Jeep Wrangler when he passed, on the right, a northbound, 2002 silver Toyota Avalon sedan driven by Jennifer Blackwell, 25, of Brunswick, Anderson said. The jeep nipped the front of the sedan, sending the jeep spinning out of control and into the southbound lane, where its driver’s side struck the front end of a southbound, blue 2002 Subaru Forester station wagon driven by a 17-year-old Boothbay girl.

The teen had been driving from Boothbay to Bath’s Hyde School, which she attends, Anderson said. He declined to name her, but confirmed that news reports identifying her as Emma Leonard were correct.

The teen received an apparent head injury and was in critical condition in an induced coma Tuesday night at Maine Medical Center in Portland, Anderson said.

A relative of Blackwell’s took her to Brunswick’s Parkview Hospital to be checked for possible minor injuries; she was treated and released Tuesday night, the deputy said.

All three drivers were traveling alone and were wearing seat belts; airbags deployed in the vehicles Crosman and the Boothbay girl were driving, Anderson said.

An investigation was continuing. Anderson said early evidence indicated the cause was an illegal right-side pass made by Crosman. No weather conditions were involved and there was no sign that substances were involved, Anderson said.

For about two hours after the accident, Route 1 was shut down and traffic was diverted onto George Wright Road, Anderson said.
