Count your blessings
Thanksgiving is nearly three weeks in the past, however, this is still the season of caring and giving.
The saying “Someone always has it worse” really hit home this week.
Waking up Sunday morning without cable TV/internet/phone service because a tree fell on the power lines on Kenney Field Drive was an inconvenience. However, we still had electrical service so the house was warm, the laundry was done and it was nice to enjoy the quiet for a while.
The inconvenience paled in comparison to what we saw once TV service was restored later on Sunday.
The devastation in Mayfield, Kentucky and other locations because of the tornadoes made me think of how lucky we are to live where we do and how losing internet, TV and phone for a few hours is like receiving a scratch compared to losing a limb … or dying.
As of Tuesday morning, it was reported that at least 88 people were killed in the storms through the Midwest, with several more still unaccounted for. Devastation is the only term I can think of – besides losing loved ones, homes, businesses, jobs, pets and much more are gone. I can’t imagine the heartache these people are going through, having to start life all over again, or living life without someone who was there just the day before.
We are lucky to live in Maine where weather-related tragedies are few and smaller in scale. Yes, we had the Ice Storm of ’98, but it wasn’t on the scale of this recent disaster.
So, as the cleanup continues to the south of us, remember to count your blessings and not dwell on the small stuff happening in your life.
