Extending the growing season
Garden Club of Wiscasset member Judy Hughes demonstrated how to extend the growing season in gardens by using floating fabric to cover growing plants both in the spring and the fall at the club's October 4 meeting.
The lightweight fabric allows both sun and water to penetrate but protects against frost and insects.
Also, naturalist and author Tom Seymour presented a slide show on foraging for useful wild plants and mushrooms in Maine.
Tea was served following the speakers.
The next meeting of the club will be on November 1 at the First Congregational Church of Wiscasset. Amy Witt, a horticulturist with the Maine Cooperative extension Service, will the guest speaker. Her topic will be Gardening for the Birds. Guests are always welcome to attend.
