Gardens’ summer Ikebana series continues July 23
Kaye Vosburgh, a floral designer with numerous awards to her credit, will be at Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens on Tuesday, July 23 to present both a demonstration and a workshop focusing on Sogetsu Ikebana, a style of Japanese flower arranging that has inspired her life and work.
This is the second of the summer’s three days of programs by highly regarded Ikebana experts. Novice and experienced flower arrangers alike are welcome to these sessions in the spacious Bosarge Family Education Center at the Gardens and may sign up for one or both.
In “Create with Flowers – Summer Ikebana,” Vosburgh’s 9:30-11:30 a.m. demonstration, she’ll explore the possibilities of working with summer flowers to create unexpected and unusual beauty. The fees for this program are $35 for members and $42 for nonmembers.
Her 1-4 p.m. hands-on-workshop, “Designing an Ikebana Table Arrangement,” will also be in the Education Center. Vosburgh will lead the class in creating refreshing, useful arrangements that combine branches and flowers. Plant materials will be provided. Participants are asked to bring flower stem clippers or scissors and garden pruners. Fees for this class are $80 for members, $95 for non-members
Most of Vosburgh’s formal training in Japanese flower arranging is in the Sogetsu School. She has attained the highest rank, Riji, in that school and teaches seven classes a month in Boston, on Cape Cod, at Tower Hill Botanic Garden, and in Schenectady, N.Y. She has entered the New England Flower Show in Boston for many years, winning numerous awards. She was awarded a Mention in the World Flower Show in 2011.
In June, Ikebana expert Lee LaPointe presented the first demonstration and workshop in the series. After Vosburgh’s July 23 programs, one set remains; on Saturday, August 17, Betty McCarthy will demonstrate how to move from traditional to modern floral design and will present a workshop on designing unusual table arrangements using fruits, vegetables, and flowers.
Reservations are required for these programs. To sign up, visit www.mainegardens.org, call 207-633-4333, ext. 101, or stop by the Gardens, off Barters Island Road in Boothbay.
