A long winter?
I have heard a few comments this past week that it’s going to be a “long winter.” The calendar says winter begins Dec. 21, over four weeks away, so we’ve got a good stretch of time before the next season arrives. Personally, I hope the snow falls on the ski slopes for a while longer before coating the coast.
Perhaps the rise in grocery and fuel prices, the continuing roller coaster cases of COVID, the mass of items sitting on barges off California and, certainly, the always uncertainty of winter weather, have prompted these comments.
Winter can be a brutal time, especially because of the weather and the cost of heating one’s home. Add to that the rising food costs and it’s no wonder why people are expressing their feelings about the coming months.
But we can all help by supporting fundraisers and programs that provide fuel and food for those in need. Boothbay Region Community Resources and other programs run by churches and area groups have already begun getting ready for the “long winter” by holding events, raffles and more. We have begun announcing those events so be sure to look online or on our pages to find out how you can help.
And, as always, look out for your neighbors to be sure they are safe. Ask them if they need help, or will need help, by shoveling, shopping, or providing information on where they can get financial help.
Let’s make it a point to be proactive and diligent throughout the next few months. Helping out will make us feel better and allow us to not dwell on the “long.”
