Slow down, abbrev. and enjoying summer
For the past two years, I have written two columns about motorists going too fast and asking everyone to slow down on our roads. This is the second one for 2021.
Ever since I got pulled over by a Lincoln County deputy on Back Narrows Road in Boothbay a couple of years back, I have tried to be aware of the speed limits. I have not always been good about it, but a note from a friend on Southport this week reminded me that some motorists haven’t been good about it as well.
So, please watch your speed out on narrow roads. We have a lot of pedestrians who enjoy walking, as well as bicyclists who have a right to be riding on the roads. Please avoid a tragedy by slowing down.
It is getting close to schools opening as well, so why not get in the habit of checking your speed.
Another reminder: We are in the months where the Associated Press manual (which is what we follow) requires us to abbreviate the month if it is followed by a date: Aug., Sept., Oct., Nov., Dec., Jan. and Feb. If letter writers and those sending press releases could keep this in mind, it would save us a few seconds each time. There are numerous times each day and week that we have to change these months from full spelling to abbreviation. Kind of makes the job monotonous!
Hope you have enjoyed your summer months. It has been a different kind of summer weather wise but not a total washout. One of the best weather months of the year, September, is on our doorstep and hopefully we won’t get any surprises.
