Pemaquid Chapter, DAR holds March meeting
The March meeting of the Pemaquid Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution was called to order by Vice Regent Louise Brown on March 12 at 11:02 a.m. in the library of the Lincoln Home in Newcastle. The Ritual was led by Vice Regent Brown and included the Invocation, Pledge of Allegiance, American’s Creed and Preamble to the Constitution. The President General’s Message was read by Shirley Peverly. Members Louise Brown, Sue Hochstein, Sara Fahnley, Miriam Buckley, Carolyn Harris, Sara Crespi, Shirley Peverly and Eleanor O’Donnell and new associate member Elisabeth Lindsay attended.
All were encouraged to attend the 128th Continental Congress in Washington, D.C., June 26-30.
The National Defense message was taken from an article in the July/Aug. 2017 issue of American Spirit Magazine about soldiers deployed to Portland Head Light to warn citizens of oncoming attacks from British soldiers. Louise Brown read a note from Louise Burns, a longtime member who lives in South Carolina wishing us a Happy St. Patrick’s Day.
Elisabeth Lindsay (Sara Crespi’s daughter) was welcomed as an associate member. Her primary Chapter is the Sarah Ann Cochrane Chapter in Plymouth, Michigan. Elizabeth was surprised when Vice Regent Brown presented her with her insignia pins. They were a gift from her mother. Shirley Peverly read an article from the Maine Historical Society, “Holding up the Sky” which honors and explores the experiences of the Wabanaki, the First People of Maine. In addition, she referred all present to Down East Magazine (Jan. 2019) which features, “Last Stand,” an article on the Emerald Ash Borer and the threat to the ash trees which are used in Indian basket making.
The program was presented by Elisabeth Lindsay who showed us how to fold small flags and make para cords to be given to service members.
