Woody plants workshop
Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens horticulturist Will Bridges knows his trees, shrubs and vines: woody plants. He’ll present an indoor and outdoor workshop in their uses and benefits at the Botanical Gardens on Saturday, July 21, from 9 a.m. to noon.
Trees, shrubs and vines provide the structural framework of any garden and are a valuable addition to the home landscape. During the first portion of the class, in the Bosarge Family Education Center, Bridges will cover the different uses of woody plants and how to select the right plant for the right location. He’ll also show woody plants that have multi-season interest and are used at the Botanical Gardens.
During the second half of the program, the group will head outdoors, where Bridges will point out the ornamental value of some of the Botanical Gardens’ great woody plants.
Bridges is in his fourth season of gardening at Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens and his presentations have been favorites with visiting groups and at the Portland Flower Show.
He was born and brought up in Caribou. Now, he says, he and his wife Dotti “live on a 6-acre slice of heaven in Alna.” He received a bachelor’s degree in landscape horticulture from the University of Maine and has been gardening in Maine most of his life.
Prices for this class are $35 for members and $42 for nonmembers. To sign up, call 633-4333, ext. 101;, go to www.MaineGardens.org, or stop by the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens off Barters Island Road in Boothbay.
