Workshops offer gardening techniques
There are numerous good reasons for people to garden, no matter what their age, and Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens’ new series of seven classes will provide adults with tried-and-true ways to keep the joy of gardening and its health-giving benefits in their lives for many years to come. The first workshop in the series on Friday, April 12, will be “Accessible Edible Gardens.”
Growing our own food is one of the most satisfying and healthful gardening activities. In the April 12 workshop, Irene Brady Barber, the Gardens’ therapeutic horticulture coordinator, will show how garden beds can accommodate various levels of upper-body strength or mobility. She’ll show the advantages of raised gardens and help participants make vegetable and herb selections. With Barber as their guide, the group will visit the Lerner Garden of the Five Senses and gain inspiration and ideas from its raised beds.
Barber, who has a background in communications and horticulture, will teach most of the series workshops, which are from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The classes will meet in the Bosarge Family Education Center, with valuable forays into the gardens. Instructors for the May and June workshops, respectively, are experienced teachers and Gardens horticulturists Diane Walden and Dick Zieg.
The full schedule for the series is as follows:
April 12: “Incredible Edible Gardens”
May 10: “Container Gardening: Lots of Pots!”
