After an executive session Tuesday, the Wiscasset School Committee voted unanimously to expel a 14-year-old student who allegedly carved threats into bathroom stalls at Wiscasset Middle High School, prompting the town to close it and Wiscasset Elementary School Oct. 24. The student was later charged with Terrorizing and Criminal Mischief, according to School Resource Officer Cory Hubert. Arraignment is set for Nov. 26.

Town Manager John O’Connell has confirmed, the incident involved a bomb threat.

In her superintendent’s report, Terry Wood said 10 students were accepted to the Honors Music Festival Nov. 15. In the past, according to music teacher Kim Brewer, three were accepted, at most.

Wood said the schools are having dismissal problems, since the two swapped dismissal times to give high school students a complete schedule. Wood said pick ups at the high school are competing with buses and student drivers at a slightly later hour. Principal Chuck Lomonte suggested student drivers could be dismissed slightly later, and that parents picking up could collect students from one of the back parking lots to ease congestion near the bus pick up areas.

Wood said the budget process would start soon, and she believed that, for the first time, Wiscasset should allocate funds for Center for Technical Education (CTE) programs at Bath Center for Technical Education. The center asked for $5,000 last year, but the budget process had already been  completed, and Wiscasset had been unable to provide it. The money is needed due to more students taking CTE programs.

WMHS will participate in Alternative Organizational Structure (AOS) 93’s Secondary School Information Night, from 5 to 7 p.m. Nov. 18 at Great Salt Bay School in Damariscotta.
