Celebrations
Celebrations have and will be held this week.
American Legion Post 36 started things off Saturday with its annual community awards. Congratulations to all the deserving recipients. Good choices all. Read more about the ceremony in this week’s issue and online.
As I write on Tuesday afternoon, Department of Marine Resources’ Elaine Jones, Spruce Point Inn and Burnt Island Light volunteers are busy getting ready for the visual celebration marking the 200th year of Burnt Island Light. After some fun at Spruce Point Inn, the lighthouse lantern will be illuminated and fireworks will follow. This will mark its 73,000th night of service to mariners and local fishermen, with Coast Guard and state officials scheduled to be on hand to certify this historic event. Congratulations to all who helped with the refurbishing of the lighthouse and keeper’s house, for the fundraising for that purpose, and for keeping the dream alive.
Area veterans are scheduled to be honored at the American Legion Hall in Boothbay and at Southport Memorial Library on Thursday, Nov. 11 at 11 a.m. (both locations). Let us never forget their duty to our country.
On Saturday, Maine Press Association will be handing out its 2020-2021 awards with an online program. Our staffs didn’t win as many awards as we would have liked to, but congratulations to Bill Pearson, Joseph Charpentier, Lisa Kristoff, Steve Edwards and Susan Johns for the awards they won. We will announce those awards next week.
Should I have called Daylight Saving Time a celebration? Not in my book. We all know what it means!
