Mathias Fine Art presents new group show
“A different LOOK!” is now on view at Mathias Fine Art
And what is different about this group show? The participation of a new artist, Genetta McLean, who has a very different way of looking at her chosen subject matter, and new works by some of the veteran professionals who have shown previously at the gallery.
McLean's intense, small paintings of fruits and vegetables often include delicately rendered small birds. She works in oils on wooden panels; her fine draftsmanship is combined with the use of glowing color and eggshell-smooth surfaces.
The grouping of the objects composed together is always at eye-level, giving a “different look” when contrasted with the more customary approach to still life arrangements.
The gilt framing of these small, polished paintings compliments the subject matter, so that in some way the viewer is transported to another place and time.
Forming a striking contrast, the large, unframed, highly glazed, abstract oil paintings of Patt Franklin invite viewers into a tumultuous and emotional world. The intensity of pure color and the flowing abstract shapes lead the eye into a very different pictorial space. Without imagery, Franklin creates a sense of mood and environment by using tone and extraordinary color fusing across the painting's surface.
These two painters, whose approach to their work is so different, reveal themselves as true masters in their separate fields.
Then Brigitte Keller's large abstract compositions present gallery visitors with yet another contrast; here all is peace, reflection, and serenity. The contemplative mood of her paintings, which are executed in a polymer egg wax emulsion on canvas, is achieved by a sophisticated arrangement of simple geometric forms, painted and overpainted in subtle tones.
Other artists participating in “a different LOOK!” are Paul Feyling, Michael Culver, M. Holland Bartsch, John Lorence and Brenda Bettinson.
Mathias Fine Art is on Barter’s Island, 6.5 miles from Boothbay Center; a delightful drive that will take you across two handsome bridges.
