Going through pictures the other day brought me back to a 1970s Christmas parade at Disney World, plus harness racetracks and horsemen, and bowling centers and awards banquets, each trip or other event fun to see again, nearly a half century later. The photos also reminded me, in the ’70s, people knew how to dress.

Several annual Wiscasset memory-makers are at hand. Take them up on it.

June 25 is one of the oldest traditions in town, the strawberry festival at St. Philip’s. This has been missed in the pandemic and we welcome it back to its rightful place as one of the first signs of summer. It also raises funds for the Hodge Street church that helps people meet their food and other needs. So get there if you can.

And stop by Summerfest July 23. Through it, First Congregational Church of Wiscasset has raised a lot of money over the years for community organizations.

Wiscasset is planning its July 4 festivities. The parade is always good, and Parks and Recreation’s Chelsea Taylor said in a June 7 email to groups and businesses, “(We) are looking to making (the parade) even bigger and better this year.” We look forward to it.

Schoonerfest has charted a course for its second year, in August. And wiscassetartwalk.org has announced this year’s installments for that downtown draw are June 30, July 28, Aug. 25 and Sept. 29, all from 5 to 8 p.m.

No one needs an excuse to visit Maine’s prettiest village, but those are all further reasons to put it and its restaurants and other businesses and venues on your itinerary.

Week’s partly positive parting thought: The not positive part is, the school I went to for kindergarten through sixth grade, then Newell School, now Dike-Newell, in Bath had a fire last Friday night, amid Morse High School’s annual reunion weekend being celebrated citywide. And as we reported online, a man was charged with arson; and the fire rekindled Monday, adding to the damage. However, as usual with big fires around the Midcoast, neighboring towns turned out to help. Kudos to Wiscasset and Woolwich for aiding Bath’s and other departments from as far as Yarmouth and Lisbon Friday night. And kudos again to Wiscasset and Woolwich for being among the towns the Bath Fire & Rescue Department Facebook page said returned to help on Monday.
