Two kinds of brr, and a thank you
About the only thing colder than Election Day Tuesday’s gusty winds, ahead of National Weather Service’s predicted 23F for the Midcoast that night, were the many cold-sounding political ads in Maine and elsewhere.
I was surprised an anatomical euphemism made it into one in Maine, and was not surprised some ads used unflattering pics of candidates those ads opposed. Those poorly lit, unsmiling photos are par for the political course.
Except for that euphemism use that managed to surprise me every single time I heard it on TV, this year’s ads ahead of the elections were in many respects like those of other years: As inevitable as a Maine winter.
I don’t like winter, personally. But I know a lot of us do and some work hard in it and depend on it for some of their yearly income. I don’t and won’t ski, but will still play croquet whenever the ground allows. And no matter how prudish I am in my ad-viewing, I will still watch them all and, best of all, still vote each election.
Week’s positive parting thought: Speaking of living in a country where people can vote, thank you, on Veterans Day this Friday, Nov. 11 and every day, to all who have served.
