Reacting to the emergency
The Boothbay region was hit with more than frigid cold this past weekend. The water damage done to Boothbay Region Elementary School due to burst pipes – because of the polar vortex – will take a monumental task and lots of money to fix so the students can return to their familiar classrooms and instructors.
Just when thoughts of school vacation week (Feb. 20-24) were popping into their heads, the students’ regular classes were shut down immediately. But now, through the fine effort of many in the Community School District, plans were set in motion for possible remote learning and perhaps holding some classes at Boothbay Region High School. A meeting to discuss options was scheduled for Tuesday night.
As of press time, it was not known when the school will re-open but our thanks go to those who have helped clean up the mess, those who have come up with plans for keeping the instruction going, and those who have begun fixing the damage done.
If a community can come together during an emergency, the Boothbay region is it. The schools have fine leadership and we are sure they will get through this crisis with help from staff, trustees and helping hands from the community. We hope they ask for help.
Meanwhile, the students should remember that learning can be done anywhere. Yes, it is tough not to be able to be with fellow students and teachers, but in good time, the school will reopen and staff will be there to greet you with open arms.
