Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club
The Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club wrapped up an exciting fall sailing season where we had nearly two dozen high school sailors and another six Opti sailors. The Boothbay Region High School team continued its growth while the Lincoln Academy team qualified for the Atlantic Coast Championships for the second consecutive Year. We are excited for our upcoming spring season, expecting similar numbers and continued growth and performance.
The high school sailing program, which is sponsored by the Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club and Junior Program Foundation, is open to all students in the region who have an interest in learning to sail. The Junior Program Foundation (JPF) provides funding for the program and also financial aid for those who need it. BHYC provides its boats and facilities in support of the local sailors. This program meets after school Monday through Thursday. The fall program includes opportunities for multiple ages who want to learn how to sail and race while the spring program is geared more toward students who already know the basics of sailing. Regattas are held in both seasons where they compete against schools and clubs from Portland to Camden.
In a mere five weeks you will see the sailing fleet gracing the harbor as they learn the finer points of sailing and racing, and in early June, the little Opti sailboats will be out there with younger regional sailors learning the skills and tacking around the harbor.
Just arriving are two new boats to the fleet. These boats are called RS Fevas and provide a stepping stone from the small Opti sailboats to the faster and larger 420s. The Fevas are fun, fast and can be sailed by one person. Thanks go out to the Junior Program Foundation for the purchase of these boats that only enhance the sailing experience.
If you are interested in the spring or fall programs, go the BHYC website, bhyc.net, and click on the Junior Program link to find out more about the program. High School Sailing Spring Registration is live - we hope to see you on the water with us this spring.
