Enjoying Labor Day
As the last quarter of 2023 rolled in this week, and a music icon passed on, I kind of enjoyed the Labor Day weekend the way Jimmy Buffett would have liked – little work, relaxing (but not by a beach) and just enjoying life.
I never became a Parrot Head but I did enjoy Buffett's music. As one report said about his passing, "he lived his songs." Music lovers know his songs about having fun in the sun, balancing out work and play, and enjoying the lifestyle of watching and playing in the surf, taking in the world around you without stressing over life.
The weekend's nice weather had a lot to do with relaxing – sunshine, warm temperatures and some ocean breezes at times. September is a great month for enjoying the last vestiges of summer. After a rainy summer, this weekend – especially for those who could enjoy it – was a welcome gift.
As I write this column on Labor Day morning, I am contemplating mowing the lawn. Perhaps I will, but perhaps I won't – I think I could hold off one more week. I might just head to the shore to enjoy the waves, sunshine and clean Maine air. If I had a boat, I'd probably jump into it, invite some friends, and putter around for an hour or two. Isn't Labor Day supposed to be a day of relaxation after three quarters of the year working? I have usually worked most Labor Days during my 36 years at the Register – to avoid a hectic going-to-press day on Tuesday but this year was different. Buffett's death kind of made me think that life isn't all work – you have to take time for play.
The lawnmower stayed in the storage building.
Enjoy the rest of your week!
