Lynda Charlene (Sweezey) Brown, 81, passed away peacefully on Jan. 20, 2024 in North Kingstown, Rhode Island, with her family at her side. Originally from Melrose, Massachusetts, Lynda was born on May 19, 1942, the second child of the late Doris (VanBuskirk) and the late Elwin Sweezey, both formerly from Malden, MA. She is survived by her younger brother, Ken Sweezey of Pleasanton, California and predeceased by her older brother, Richard Sweezey.  

Lynda married the late Ernest D. Brown Jr. of Cape Cod, Massachusetts in January 1981. They moved to Southport Island, Maine in April 1981 where Ernie was a fisherman. Their daughter, Alacia Crosby Brown, was born in 1985, making their family complete. Most recently, Lynda lived with her daughter, Alacia Brown-Bless and son-in-law, Andy Bless, with her two grandchildren, Alexandra Bless and Andrew Bless. Although spending the last few years in Rhode Island, Lynda always called Southport her real home.  

Lynda attended Melrose schools, graduating from Melrose High School in 1960. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She graduated from John Robert Powers Modeling School in Boston and then Malden Hospital School of Nursing in 1967 where she was a member of Phi Theta Xi Sorority. Lynda enjoyed the comradery of working in the emergency room at Malden Hospital for several years and then did private duty nursing until she and Ernie moved to Maine in 1981. With the move to Maine, Lynda stayed at home to raise her family, working part time as a cook in restaurants in the Boothbay Harbor area. She’ll be remembered for her oversize blueberry muffins at Rocktide Inn Restaurant.   

Throughout Alacia’s school years, Lynda volunteered her time and energy in support of the Southport Elementary School and the Boothbay Junior/High School. Lynda proudly supported Alacia’s school activities including following the girls basketball team bus throughout Maine for away games. Lynda always opened her home to Alacia’s friends, serving as a communal mother and mentor to many.  Lynda loved all animals and always regretted that she didn’t follow her heart and go to veterinary school. Nonetheless, she loved and cared for many cats and dogs over the years. Lynda’s proudest moments were Alacia’s graduation from Wheaton College and her two grandchildren.

Lynda was a loving daughter, sister, wife, mother and nana. She will be remembered by many for her loving heart and compassion for others. She will be laid to rest in the Brown family plot in Oak Grove Cemetery in Hyannis, Massachusetts. May she rest in peace. A graveside service will be held at Oak Grove Cemetery in Hyannis at a later date for family and friends.
