Elwood Johnson
Elwood “Frank” Johnson, 76, of Boothbay passed away peacefully at home on Jan. 26, 2024 after a long illness.
He was born in Salmon, Idaho on April 1, 1947 to Frank Jr. and Etta June (Mund) Johnson.
Elwood graduated from Madison Academy in Madison, Tennessee in 1966 and soon enlisted in the Army. He was a Vietnam veteran and served for 10 years in the military.
In 1969, he met Diane Lee Smalley and they were married on Feb. 15, 1970. While in the military, he attended Helicopter Flight School and worked in personnel and as a photographer.
After the Army, he worked a variety of jobs. One of his favorites was working in construction as a heavy equipment operator.
“Frank” loved nature and was an avid reader and photographer. He enjoyed volunteering at the Boothbay Region Land Trust and being in the photography club at Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens. He loved singing in the Methodist Church Choir under the direction of Dominic Garvey and acting in community theater.
Elwood was predceased by his father, Frank Johnson Jr., and two brothers, Dennis and Roger Johnson.
He is survived by his wife, Diane Lee Smalley; son, Jason Elwood (Stefanie) Johnson; mother, June M. Mooers; sister, Sherry Balderson; nieces, Jeanie (Matt) Daniel, Janelle (Steve) Henrick and Stacy Hill; and nephews, Jeremy Johnson and Robert Balderson.
A private family gathering will be held in the spring.
