Doiron is a fan favorite of the Boothbay region. His books check out from the library’s collection constantly and have circulated hundreds of times among a diverse group of patrons. The author’s Mike Bowditch series are among his most popular works and Doiron will discuss the most recent addition to this series, Pitch Dark, during his talk.
The Mike Bowditch series follows the titular character through his work and life as a game warden in northern Maine. In “Pitch Dark,” Bowditch must chase down a cunning and dangerous fugitive in the North Maine Woods.
Doiron took inspiration for the character from his days as a reporter. “I’ve been fortunate to meet a lot of wardens over the years when I was writing journalism for Down East and then again when I was researching [my first novel] ‘The Poacher’s Son,’” Doiron said. “They have extremely difficult and misunderstood jobs.” Doiron, an outdoorsman himself, is a Registered Maine Guide.
Doiron’s 21 novels have received critical acclaim and have made their way onto “best of” lists from Down East Magazine, PopMatters, and Amazon.com and bestseller lists from Bookscan, American Booksellers Association Indie, USA Today, and the Portland Press Herald’s Maine Sunday Telegram. His books have received numerous awards including the Barry Award, Strand Critics Award for Best First Novel, an Anthony Award, Macavity Award, Thriller Award for Best First Novel, New England Society Book Award, and multiple Maine Literary Awards.
Paul is Editor Emeritus of Down East: The Magazine of Maine, having served as Editor in Chief from 2005 to 2013 before stepping down to write full time. A native of Maine, he attended Yale University, where he graduated with a degree in English, and holds an MFA in creative writing from Emerson College. He is a former member of the Maine Arts Commission and is a past chair of the Maine Humanities Council.
