Maine House Speaker Ross and Secretary of State Bellows rally voters at October events in Lincoln County
On Sunday, Oct. 6, Speaker of the Maine House of Representatives Rachel Talbot Ross (D-Portland) addressed the sold-out crowd of 120 guests at the Lincoln County Democratic Committee’s (LCDC) annual Harvest Dinner at Le Barn event center in Jefferson. Ross emphasized that there are only 30 days left until “the most important election of our lifetimes, perhaps in the history of the country.”
Thirteen days later, on Oct. 19, Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows energized more than 200 at the LCDC’s Rally for Democracy, held at the American Legion in Damariscotta.
Bellows urged the crowd to help maintain Maine's top voter participation status from 2022, “Let’s turn out every single person that we know to vote. Let’s make Maine number one for voter participation in 2024!”
Ross stressed, "Maintaining our Democratic majorities in the state house and senate will not be easy. It will require hard work, dedication, and an unwavering belief in the power of our shared values,” Ross said. “Folks in Lincoln County know this and that's why they are stepping up to engage with their neighbors, mobilize their communities, and ensure that every vote is earned. Together, we can strengthen our democracy and ensure that on November 5 our voices are heard loud and clear."
Bellows emphasized that every citizen who is a resident of Maine has the right to vote without exception, early voting is available now at town and city halls, and same-day voter registration is permitted on election day with proof of identity and residency.
Both events featured appearances from Democratic candidates and incumbents, who connected with voters and discussed key issues.
At the Harvest Dinner, guests enjoyed music from Laura Buxbaum and Brian Dunn of Waldoboro while feasting on soups, stews, chowders, and pies prepared by 15 volunteer chefs. Fresh-pressed cider from local orchards complemented the meal. “The annual gathering is one of LCDC’s most popular events,” said organizer Valarie Johnson of Somerville. “And the funds we raised directly impacts our grassroots efforts for the current election.”
The Rally for Democracy took on a festive tone as a Get Out The Vote (GOTV) party, open to all. Local favorites The Gulch performed live music, and families enjoyed a red, white, and blue bounce house, crafts, and games. A Maine makers market featured five artisans focused on upcycled goods, slow fashion and found art. Attendees also had opportunities to sign up for GOTV efforts and gather voter resources.
The LCDC Campaign Headquarters, located at 27 River Road in Newcastle, is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. to answer voter questions or accept volunteer help.
