Adopt an adult cat month at LCAS

At the beginning of September, Lincoln County Animal Shelter in Edgecomb house 41 adult cats that needed homes.
So the month of September was dubbed “Adopt an Adult Cat” month at LCAS, with the goal being to adopt out 30 cats in 30 days. The adoption fee has been lowered to $30 (usually $70).
Since then, 17 cats have found their forever homes.
“We had so many cats that needed homes, we came up with this idea to encourage adoption and get people involved,” said Carrie Koskela, officer manager at LCAS.
“It's been a joy to see all the adoptions this month,” said Tammy Steinmetz, a shelter attendant. “We had one cat who had been with us since 2011 who finally had a home.”
LCAS is very focused on finding not just homes for their animals, but good, loving homes appropriate for the animal being adopted.
All adopters are asked to fill out a three-page adoption application and either bring it to the shelter, scan and email it, or fax it in.
The staff does a background check and calls references, and makes sure the home is a good fit for both the family and animal. Renters are also asked to provide a reference from the landlord, as some landlords do not allow pets and it would be sad for everyone if an adopted animal came back for that reason.
“The process can take anywhere from five minutes to two days depending on a lot of factors,” Steinmetz said. “We really care about these animals, and their health and well being is always foremost in our minds. That's one of the reasons Carrie (Koskela) doesn't let any black cats get adopted near Halloween, because it might be a ‘fad’ adoption and not one into a loving forever home.”
Anyone interested in adoption can download an application at www.lcasmaine.com. The shelter is located at 27 Atlantic Highway in Edgecomb, and they are open Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The shelter is always looking for donations, and volunteer dog walkers or cat cuddlers.
