Alna Column: Bull's-eyes and great supper
Our first selectman, David Abbot, has won another archery competition. On March 23, he traveled to Yarmouth for the Maine Archery Association State Championships, which are sanctioned by National Field Archery Association of America. He shot in the senior division, but don't let that senior thing throw you off. David won the Silver Senior Championship with a perfect score of 300. It might not sound like much to you, but 300 bull's-eyes is like bowling a 300 game. It takes a lot of strength and good hand-eye coordination. Congratulations, David, on a job well done.
Saturday was a great day, with sunshine and the AVFD supper. Who could ask for anything better. We landed at fire station at 4:10 p.m.; we will get there earlier the next time. The parking lot was full, and cars were parked up and down the road on both sides. I think everyone who had ever been to one of the suppers was there for this first one of 2014.
The beans and ham were cooked just right, and there was more salad and coleslaw than I could fit on my plate. The rolls, biscuits and cornbread were so good, and the desserts were unbelievable.
You had choice of blueberry, lemon and apple pie, cheesecake, cake and real whipped cream to put on top. How do I know it was real? I watched the girls whipping it right at the table. There is nothing like the real thing. I had some on my pie. The coffee was hot and the lemonade was cold. If you didn't get there, I'm really sorry for you folks.
I hope another one will be held next month. If you’re looking for good food, visiting with friends and a great price, this is the supper to come to. Some say I'm prejudiced, but no, not really, I just call it how I see it and experience it. Thanks to all of you who donated in any way to the success of this event, from the membership of the AVFD.
The Narrow Gauge Farm run by Amy and Toby Stockford was accepted into the Boothbay Center's Farmers Market. Now, this was not easy; they had to prepare and take samples with them to be tried by the board. The way Amy cooks, however, it was a sure thing.
The market starts in May, held on Thursdays at the Boothbay Common. I will have more as month goes on. In June, new piglets will arrive, 12 for each sow would give them a good start. My idea is then not only will Alna be known for the Railroad Museum, but the Stockford's farm, too.
Saturday, April 19 is opening day at Wiscasset Speedway on the West Alna Road. Practice day last Saturday was full of race fans getting a look at the new cars. Drivers were getting the kinks out after resting this winter. The track crew and cooks were also practicing, so to speak. Gates open early; races start at 2 p.m., so grab a blanket in case of wind, and have a great time. There is nowhere I know of in the area where you can have so much fun for $5.
It is time to do some yard cleaning and get to planting those flower and vegetable gardens. Have a good week, and like Jackie Hall always says, “Remember God loves you and so do I.”
