Arlene G. Smith
Arlene Goyea Smith of Southport, Maine passed peacefully on March 23, 2025.
Born Aug. 2, 1932 to Wilfred and Lois Goyea of W. Mansfield, Massachusetts, Arlene graduated from Mansfield High School in 1950 and received a teaching degree from Salem State College in 1954. That same year she married Earle H. Smith Jr from Marblehead, Massachusetts. They settled in South Windsor, Connecticut in 1959 to raise their two children.
Arlene was active in the Wapping Community Church, Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts. It’s where she developed her love for gardening, sailing, sewing, tennis and cake decorating. Many happy days were spent with close neighbors, the Iacobonis and the Frosts.
After teaching for over 25 years, she retired from East Hartford Public Schools in 1992. In 1995, after the house Arlene and Earle built was completed, they retired to Barters Island, Maine.
Arlene continued to play tennis, took up quilting and had many volunteer positions. She volunteered for: Boothbay Harbor Congregational Church, Wawenock Power Squadron, YMCA, Boothbay Harbor Memorial Library used bookstore, and St Andrews Thrift Store. She enjoyed book club and spending time with her close friends, Carol Saunders, Barbra Zarpentine and Irene Prall.
Arlene is survived by her daughter Sharon Smith and partner Greg Robinson of Lebanon, Connecticut; son Earle H. Smith III, and wife Julie Ann Smith of Chicago, Illinois and their two children, Paige Elizabeth Smith of Grand Forks, North Dakota, Ian Michael Smith of Arlington, Virginia.
She was predeceased by husband Earle H. Smith Jr, sister Dorothy Bedard and brother Robert Goyea.
There will be a graveside service June 21, 2025, at 1 p.m. at Evergreen Cemetery. In lieu of flowers consider a donation of time or money to a community organization.
