Carlton Plummer juror for A Stroke of Art event
Carlton Plummer, professor emeritus of UMass at Lowell, will be juror for A Stroke of Art, a new multi-day event of the Boothbay Harbor Fest. This major art happening is a celebration of the scenic beauty “that enhances the lifestyle, livelihood and spirit” of the Boothbay region of Maine.
Plummer, an experienced and sought after artist and teacher, was born in Brunswick and spent his formative years growing up on a farm outside of Augusta.
The master artist is well known on the American art scene for his vibrant watercolors of the Maine coast. Carlton and his wife, artist Joan Plummer, live and work in East Boothbay and in Tequesta, Florida.
“After an illustration career in the ’50s and resuming higher education in art, the die was set for my transition from commercial art to a special blend of art educator/fine art painter,” Plummer said of his career. “Starting as a plein air painter in the ’60s, I gradually became a studio painter. Most of the paintings in this exhibit reflect studio painting, which allowed me opportunity to explore and experiment with mixed media, and a variety of subject matter.
“A distinct painting style was evident early and developed as a result of influences from my teaching and painting. The bold use of expressive brush strokes and strong color became my hallmark. Although miniaturism plays a minor role in my painting repertoire, working in a restricted format serves diversification.”
