Christmas at Nickels-Sortwell House
Experience a 19th century-style Christmas with 21st century flair at Historic New England’s Nickels-Sortwell House Dec. 7-9, from noon to 3 p.m., part of Wiscasset Village’s annual Holiday Marketfest. The first floor of this stunning Federal-style mansion will be decorated for the holidays with gorgeous greens for inspiration and splendor. The Lincoln County Historical Association and Garden Club of Wiscasset will transform a formal parlor into the setting for a family Christmas. Another parlor will feature the unique designs of Stephanie Wright and Laurie Green. Michelle Peele Floral + Home Design will work magic in the solarium, and Datvik Deirkrikorian of Water Lily Flowers and Gifts will adorn the dining room. Architectural details in each room include exquisitely carved moldings and grand fireplaces custom-made, two hundred years ago, by local carpenters for Captain Nickels’ showplace. Guides will be on hand with stories of the house and the families who lived here while visitors walk freely through the first floor. Admission is $5 for Wiscasset residents and $10 non-residents. Personal photography is welcome.
After touring the house, stop in the original kitchen for a warm drink and tasty delights from the Lincoln County Historical Association. Then walk a few short steps down Federal Street to visit the Nickels-Sortwell House Barn and see the Wiscasset Fire Society’s 1804 fire truck. While you’re there, shop for farm and garden-inspired gifts from Carriage House Gardens, Mindful Gardens, Morris Farm, Joan Taylor and Kahren’s Kitchen. Sarah’s Café will have a delectable tidbit station in the barn on Saturday from noon t0 3 p.m., offering complimentary mini-grilled cheese sandwiches and hot tomato soup shots.
