'Come too far to turn back now'
Wiscasset's hometown indie-rock band, Liquid Daydream, is back together after a decade of silence. Two of their latest singles have been aired on WTOS and WBLM for some time now and are currently available for a free digital download.
To quote a lyrical phrase in “Almost There,” one of the two new singles, they have “gone too far to turn back now” and want to share their dream with the rest of the world. They are gearing up for a new album and a live performance in Portland.
The band celebrates 20 years of music that many of their fans have missed hearing since their last performances in 2002.
When Liquid Daydream started in 1991, few people owned cell phones and the Internet had yet to come into the mainstream. Yet the music endures.
In their late teens to early 20s when they first formed Liquid Daydream, band members are now parents with full time jobs. They have grown a little older, a little wiser and have honed their artistic talents over the years. Band members are: Matthias Sampson, vocals; Chris Muccino, guitars; Mykk Rankin, bass; and Jordan Warsky, drums.
Some might compare their music to bands like Linkin Park, Pearl Jam, The Doors, Grateful Dead or the Red Hot Chili Peppers. But Liquid Daydream has a sound all their own. They draw together a mix of words and sound inspired by life's challenges and their experiences here in midcoast Maine and Wiscasset, the band's hometown.
One play-through of either single will tell you this is a band that knows how to perform as a tight unit. The singles blend heavier percussion and guitar with the trademark acoustical river underlying it all. It is, as some have described, a band with substance, and is also a band with heart.
The band took off like rocket between 1992 and 2002, performing with local and national acts such as Rustic Overtones, Twisted Roots, Strangefolk and Percy Hill. They got a lot of statewide coverage in magazines and newspapers. So where did they go?
Muccino said band members needed a break in 2002. Warsky headed west to accept a job in the L.L. Bean company. Sampson's second son had just been born. Rankin also became a new parent that year. “We all kind of went our separate ways,” Muccino said, who also became a father around that time.
Asked what draws them to their music now, Sampson and Muccino agree that life's experiences serve as inspiration. They really wanted to start playing together as a band again.
“Music for me has always been a kind of therapy,” Muccino said.
Liquid Daydream's resurgence began in 2010, when Muccino and Sampson met unexpectedly at the Montsweag Roadhouse. The two began developing a new album titled “Roadsigns” under another band they formed, Endless Interstate.
Warsky then contacted them to see about the rest of Liquid Daydream having a jam session. In April, the four gathered in Scarborough to record the two singles, at the home of Wiscasset native Toni Gatti. Since that time, Liquid Daydream has been working on their new album, which is due to be released in the late summer of 2013.
Liquid Daydream's two latest singles, “Almost There” and “New Revelation” are available as a free digital download for a brief time on their Facebook page and ReverbNation. Fans can also watch the videos on YouTube.
They expect to perform live in Portland after the release of their new CD. For more information, visit the band's Facebook page.
