‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ hits the big screen at Lincoln Theater
Lincoln Theater is pleased to present the Academy Award winning film adaptation of Harper Lee’s beloved classic “To Kill a Mockingbird.” This is the third film in a new film series – Screen Thoughts, America’s Racial Struggles on the Screen, hosted by writer and film reviewer Christine Merser. To Kill a Mockingbird’s selection by the Library of Congress for preservation in the National Film Registry for being “culturally, historically, and aesthetically significant” makes it the perfect selection to share on the big screen.
Six-year-old Scout Finch (Mary Badham) and her older brother, Jem (Phillip Alford), live in sleepy Maycomb, Alabama where they spend much of their time with their friend Dill (John Megna) spying on their reclusive and mysterious neighbor, Boo Radley (Robert Duvall). When Atticus Finch (Gregory Peck), their widowed father and a respected lawyer, defends a black man named Tom Robinson (Brock Peters) against fabricated rape charges, the trial and the events surrounding it expose the children to the evils of racism and stereotyping. “
Set in the racially divided Deep South during the 1930s, “To Kill a Mockingbird” addresses themes of prejudice, morality, and injustice,” said Merser. “The film gracefully explores the impact of racism and bigotry on individuals and society, promoting empathy, courage, and the power of standing up for what is right.”
If you’ve seen “To Kill a Mockinbird” already, you know it’s one to see again, and especially on the big screen. And if you’ve never seen it, don’t miss your chance!
