Low temps, low totals
It's possible that the low temperatures were to blame for a low voter turnout January 7 in Wiscasset.
As of 2:30 p.m. only 80 people had cast ballots for the Wiscasset School board vote, on top of the 60 absentee ballots already sent in, Town Clerk Chris Wolfe said.
“Maybe when school gets out we'll have some of the teachers come down to vote,” she said.
Voting will be open until 8 p.m. at the Wiscasset Community Center, 242 Gardiner Road.
Voters are tasked with picking a board that will ultimately shape Wiscasset's school future; the board will be tasked with picking a new superintendent.
There are two contested races: Colleen Bennett is up against Wenonah Wirick for a term that expires in June; Douglas Smith, Steven Smith and Sharon Nichols are all vying for two spots that will expire in June of 2016. Eugene Stover and Glen T. Craig are running unopposed for two spots that expire June, 2015.
Wolfe said it was somewhat surprising to see so few voters turnout after a decisive November vote that peeled Wiscasset schools away RSU 12. Whether it's a lack of enthusiasm or low-temperatures remain to be seen.
“There was so much energy (for the withdrawal vote) so it's a bit surprising (that so few turned out),” Wolfe said. “It seems like some of the hype has died down since the withdrawal. But, we still have a couple of races; there will be two people who don't make it onto the school board.”
