Kerr+Jones Gallery in East Boothbay is honored and excited to welcome  artists and partners Gail Page and Robert Shetterly to a gallery reception on Thursday, Aug. 1, from 4 to 6 p.m. The gallery, now in its third season, will feature recent work from Page and Shetterly who reside in Brooksville and have been dedicated community activists and humanitarians in Maine and far beyond.

Robert Shetterly’s path toward a career as an artist and writer was rather serendipitous. Although he majored in English literature at Harvard, he took courses in drawing which proved to be life-changing. After moving to Maine he became an accomplished painter, illustrator and printmaker. His artwork is widely collected in the U.S. and abroad.

When asked if Shetterly could send Kerr+Jones Gallery a synopsis of his many years together with Page, he wrote “In over 30 years only once before have Gail and I exhibited together. Our art expresses a full range of the human experience —from gentle humor to surreal darkness, from sweet companionship to political tension, from living in the moment to wrestling with history.”

Shetterly is well known for his extraordinary project “Americans Who Speak the Truth” a collection of portraits he began painting more than 20 years ago. His stunning images of Americans who are role models for democracy and citizenship have been shown and discussed in 35 states and exhibited at the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C.

Page has been a fashion designer, illustrator and children’s book author in her long career. It’s impossible not to be utterly charmed by her works of love and longing on the coast of Maine. Currently she’s painting wondrous moments of joy featuring dogs gazing out to sea.  Dogs and swimmers, sailboats, seabirds and coastal islands figure prominently in her recent paintings. Her popular children’s books feature her favorite dog and cat —Bobo and Bonkers. Titles include “How to be a Good Dog, Bobo,” “Bobo and the New Neighbor” and “How to be a Good Cat."
