Richard E. Brown
Richard Earl Brown, 82, died on June 24, 2013.
He was born in Boothbay Harbor on September 28, 1930, to Edmund and Viola Brown. He attended Boothbay Harbor High School and graduated with the class of 1948. Earl enlisted with the Navy and served in Korea during the war. He later transferred to the Air Force where he enjoyed working as a mechanic on the “new” jet engines.
After the service Earl returned to Boothbay Harbor where he worked at the family restaurant, Brown’s Wharf. In 1974 Earl moved to Florida, but it wasn’t long before he missed Maine and started back up the coast and stopping in Arlington, Virginia, where he found a job as a manager at the Market Inn, in Washington, D.C.
It was back to Maine in the 1980s where he became the captain of the fishing vessel Theresa and research boat, Tioga, providing ocean research information for colleges. His favorite story was finding a helicopter in the Long Island Sound. Always one to find new ventures, Earl began transporting new, sporty yachts from Boston to Fort Lauderdale and Miami. He loved being on the sea.
Over the years Earl made many contributions to the Boothbay Harbor community. He was a selectman in Boothbay Harbor for nine years and only missed one meeting during that time. Something he was very proud of.
For many years he was the harbor master of Boothbay Harbor and spent many mornings as a school bus driver. He was a standing member of the American Legion and was a Mason.
Earl will long be remembered for his baked stuffed lobster, lobster thermador and his favorite, finnan and haddie. And Earl loved his faithful companion, “Cappy.” Earl was one of a kind, a great Dad who made many sacrifices for his children. He will be sadly missed and dearly remembered.
He was predeceased by his brothers, Lee, David and Errol Brown; sons, Scott Richard Brown, Dean Lawrence Hutchins Brown; and granddaughter, Sarah Kristen Brown.
He is survived by his wife, Sandra Curtis Brown; daughters, Arlene and husband, Walter Cole, Jennifer Hutchins and companion Steve Overlook; sons, Dwight and his wife, Noreen Brown, Steven and his wife, Kimberly Brown, and John Hutchins; grandchildren, Scott Brown, Marcia Garnecky, Heather Farmer, Melissa Payne, Jessica Brown, Jesse Weeks, Jamie Weeks, Riley Overlook, Brandon Hutchins, Cheyenne Hutchins; great-grandchildren, Gabrielle Lewis, Gaige Garnecky, Willow Garnecky, Raven Farmer, Maddilynn Payne, Cali Brown and Chloe Watson.
