Rising Tide hosts discussion about Lincoln County trash and recycling
Rising Tide Co-op in Damariscotta will host citizen journalists Mark Ward and Michael Uhl for an informal overview and discussion of where the waste generated in Lincoln County goes on Wednesday, Sept. 8, 5:30-6:30 p.m.. “Lincoln County Waste: Where does it all go?” will feature a discussion of the materials we throw away or recycle through our transfer stations, some of the inherent challenges these systems entail, and what can be done individually and collectively to improve on them.
Regular readers of Lincoln County News will recognize Ward and Uhl from their twice monthly, very informative waste and recycling column, “Rubbish! Dispatches from the Wasteland.” The two became interested in “where it all goes” in 2018, when Lincoln County transfer stations abruptly stopped accepting certain types of plastics for recycling. What began as a simple inquiry has become a source of deep fascination accompanied by a desire to share what they have learned. The two actively follow local, statewide, and national waste matters and provide a condensed version what they learn for readers in Lincoln County News. This is a great opportunity to meet them and ask questions.
Mark is a scientist. He works as an ecological consultant on projects that support biological conservation. His fascination with waste management issues dovetails with a long-standing interest in enhancing scientific literacy. A war veteran and longtime antiwar activist, Michael Uhl has several books and scores of articles among his published works.
The event will allow time for audience questions and discussion. All members of the public are invited to this free event, which will take place under Rising Tide Co-op’s event tent. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own seating and/or picnic blankets, as seating will be limited.
