I’ve been trying to remember when I first met Rupe Neily, and I can’t. But, in one way or another, we have crossed paths many times over the years, initially through his father, Rupe, at Mainco Realty and the YMCA.

Mainco Rupe gave me my first real estate photo job. I have never been sure if I should thank him or regret the adventure. Rupe had listed the Sardine Packer Association’s “Clubhouse” in Dennysville, Maine, which is not exactly at the end of the Bristol peninsula. I met Rupe at his office which was in the vicinity of where the First National Bank of Damariscotta is now. Three days later we arrived in Dennysville (only a slight exaggeration). I photographed the property for a couple hours, then we boomed it for home.

I processed the film (black and white darkroom) and dropped contact sheets off at the office. Rupe was not entirely happy and suggested that I return for better images of the waterfront, which was at perfect low tide during our initial visit. Back I went.

The Rupert I now know (in above photo) was not around the Harbor much at that time. I don’t know where he was, but through his father, I came to learn about the family care for the region and its people. Both Rupes have been dedicated enthusiastic supporters of our community and forever champions of the Maine life. I don’t think either Rupe ever didn’t care about the specialness of this place. I know the present Rupe pretty well now, and know that he is tirelessly devoted to the preservation of our unique quality of life. He knows as much about the special hidden gems of this region as anyone I have ever met, and he is not shy about sharing his knowledge. Just ask him!

The stairs in the photo I made with Rupe are a very cool example of some of the mysteries we share. Even Rupe is a bit mystified, although this has never dampened his willingness to show folks (often visitors to Linekin Bay Resort) how to get there and where to go. The stairs go over a hill in the Mt Pisgah area from Campbell Street to Lobster Cove Road, or vice versa. Perhaps, Rupe suggests, they were once associated with the Green Shutters Inn and/or the Mt. Pisgah art community of yesteryear.

But Rupert holds many gifts for us and is always on the lookout for new adventures. His knowledge is a limitless geyser of opportunity for discovery, and you won’t need to travel to Dennysville. Get in touch with him. You won't be disappointed.
