SVCA hosts pruning workshop Oct. 7
Sheepscot Valley Conservation Association is having a Stewardship Day at the Griggs Preserve in Newcastle, from 9 a.m. to noon on Wednesday, Oct. 7. Licensed forester and licensed arborist, Tish Carr, will teach participants proper pruning techniques. Anyone who volunteers on local trails, or has an interest in maintaining trails on their own property will benefit from this work day.
Carr will focus on pruning for forest stand improvement and trails with a special emphasis on working in hemlock forests to reduce the spread of Hemlock Woolly Adelgid, an invasive insect making its way north along the coast. She will share information about identification and life history of the species.
The SVCA Griggs Preserve has 2 miles of trails through mostly hemlock forest. Though not observed at the Preserve yet, the Adelgid has been found in Wiscasset. We’ll keep our eyes open as we work along the trails and survey the property. Please RSVP to lynne@sheepscot.org, or call 207-586-5616 for more information. There is a suggested donation of $10 for this event.
