Truth matters, is consistent, and unchangeable
Dear Editor:
On Sunday, Rudy Giuliani attempted to confuse the public and perhaps even himself by stating that truth isn’t truth anymore. It is common to refer to an “untruth” as a lie. But to defy religious scripture which states “Truth is that which is constant and unchangeable, and which will prove to be true in the future,” needs to be clarified.
Science theory and conclusions are defined as knowledge, or the quest for knowledge. In short, it is based on the biblical premise of the existence of absolute, unalterable truths. For example the physics statement that what goes up, must come down is based on the knowledge that earth’s gravity pulls a ball tossed up in the air down to the ground or football receiver. Scientific conclusions are based on what is known at the time. If more knowledge is revealed, then the conclusions are modified based on the new unchangeable knowledge.
Giuliani’s statement “truth isn’t truth” is an oxymoron figure of speech where the words contradict each other. Lawyer Giuliani may want to muddy the clarity of facts to protect his client, but he should not mislead those who need to rely on unchangeable facts. Yes, a person could tell what they believe is true, but if they do that without knowing the facts their statement could be disproven. Financier Bernie Madoff did that for years until Madoff's sons told authorities that the asset management unit of Bernie’s firm was a massive Ponzi scheme. Truth is always truth until it is proven to be otherwise.
Therefore, following religious scripture, as is done by science, is essential to making the best decisions that we can count on in the future. We know repeating a lie often enough can cause a problem in the brain whereby the person thinks it is the truth and acts on a lie. In the Madoff case they lost large sums of money.
Defining truth on the basis of religious scriptures and science’s use of knowledge, when determining veracity of facts will always provide absolute, unalterable truths upon which you make critical life and death decisions.
