Two school comittee seats, one candidate on ballot
Michael Dunn Jr. is the only person on the June 10 ballot for a two-year term on the school committee. No one turned in nomination papers for a three-year term that is also open; however, the Wiscasset Newspaper has spoken with one person who was planning a write-in candidacy.
If a write-in doesn’t take the seat, the committee would appoint someone within 30 days, to serve until June 2015, Town Clerk Christine Wolfe said.
Dunn has one daughter graduating from Wiscasset High School this year and one entering in the fall. He said he wants to serve in order to help with decisions about school consolidation and other issues the town faces with the new school system.
“I don't want to be one of those people on the sidelines, that complain rather than putting some skin in the game,” Dunn said.
The 41-year-old owns J & M Gas on Route 1, and provides technical support to a Georgia-based heating equipment maker. His business background may help him in his work on the committee, he said.
“I try to look at both sides of a situation and try to decide which makes more sense.”
The most logical and least painful consolidation of Wiscasset's schools might be to merge the primary and middle schools, and move grades seven and eight to the high school, he said.
Dunn favors keeping the high school open. “If you lose your high school in town, you lose a little bit of your identity, I think.”
He is open to looking at the possibility of Wiscasset joining an alternative organizational structure (AOS) type of school unit. “If it's a viable option and it's cost-effective, and if it suits the needs of the town, I think it has to be explored,” he said.
