Wiscasset Middle High School held its annual Winter Carnival Celebration and Competition on Friday, Feb. 15. With all of the competitions planned for students, there was never a dull moment.

Winter Carnival is put on yearly by Student Council, headed by Debra Pooler. It has been a tradition for many years at WMHS. When discussing the event's importance to her, Pooler said: “Winter Carnival is so important for the kids! Having the opportunity to interact with the teachers in a different setting gives students the opportunity to see their teachers in a different light. Working together builds a unique relationship for teachers and students!” 

Winter Carnival always starts off with a kickoff assembly on Monday. Each day is also a different “spirit” day, giving students the opportunity to dress up and earn points toward their grade's Winter Carnival score. The Annual Snowball Dance is also held during the Winter Carnival. This year's Snowball King and Queen were seniors Josh Gabriele and Alie Beaucage. Students also decided to have a Snowball Prince and Princess, the recipients being Billy Pinkham and Kateleen Trask. 

Some of the larger competitions throughout Winter Carnival are The Battle of the Boards, where students decorate a class board to match their theme, Battle of the Bands, where students perform a song for the school, and Male Cheerleading, where male students come together and form a cheerleading routine to show the school. This year's Winter Carnival was successful, showing lots of participation. Pooler noted, "It is super nice to see the positive interaction and team building that happens on Winter Carnival Day! The good memories made on this day stay with students and staff for many years!"

This year, freshmen came in fourth place for overall points, with sophomores third, seniors second and juniors took an early win in their high school career, and took a quick victory lap around the school ending back in the gym, also a tradition that has been held for years. This year's grade themes were “The Finding Freshmen," a spin on "Finding Nemo," "The Scientific Sophomores,"  “The Jukebox Juniors" and “The Senior Citizens."
