Wiscasset seeks volunteers for waterfront plan working group
The Waterfront Committee approved the formation of a working group, operating as a subcommittee to the WFC, to develop an overall waterfront plan that will benefit the town and become part of the town’s Comprehensive Planning process. Projects of initial priority are 1) repairing the launch ramps; 2) replacing the town landing pier; 3) repairing the seawall between ·the recreational pier and the commercial pier; and 4) evaluating the various uses (existing and potential) of the town-owned piers.
The scope of the working group planning may be expanded in consultation with the full WFC, such as looking at ways to enhance the beauty and utility of the waterfront to include the complete waterfront: North to the RR bridge, and down to Maine Yankee and Ferry Landing, possibilities such as walking paths, parkland and other public use of the waterfront.
The working group will include five to seven interested town residents (including one member of the WFC) to examine with the town manager, the public works director, a possible engineering consultant, and others the physical condition of these resources, research and discuss their past, present and future uses, and recommend different options (and funding) for their repair or replacement.
The working group’s report shall be provided to the full Waterfront Committee for review and approval, prior to submitting to the town manager and the selectboard. The expected time commitment is this November to May 2023. We are hopeful this exciting opportunity will arouse support from many facets of the community, realizing our waterfront is an underdeveloped resource and now is the time to act. Once we receive a list of interested folks, we will interview and set a first meeting date.
