Woolwich’s annual town meeting moved to May 17
Woolwich’s annual town meeting has been rescheduled to 6 p.m., Wednesday, May 17. It will be held in the gymnasium of the elementary school on Nequasset Road. The select board announced the change when they met Wednesday evening, March 1. They’d initially planned to hold the meeting the final week of April.
“We have too many things on our plate ... a lot to digest,” Chairman David King Sr. said. He said because of inflation, nearly every line of the 2023-2024 budget was up over last year. He added moving the meeting date to mid-May would give the select board time to prepare its budget and hold a special town meeting should one be needed before June 30, the end of the town’s fiscal year.
Highly Cannaco, a business selling adult cannabis products for recreational use, moved a step closer to gaining final approval. The select board voted to accept Jan Martin’s application as complete following a required public hearing. There were no comments either in favor, or against Martin’s application.
King said afterwards Martin would still need to get state approval before opening his Route 1 store in the former Baker Auto Sales building which he’s leasing. A resident of Boothbay, Martin owns three similar stores in Boothbay, Auburn and South Portland. He has another one under construction in Brunswick. He plans to open his new Woolwich store after making renovations to the building.
Public Safety Committee
The select board is seeking volunteers to serve on its Public Safety Advisory Committee. The committee will act as a sounding board for both selectmen and the Fire/EMS departments in developing public safety policy. The 5-person committee is open to residents who are neither a town employee, nor a member of the Fire/EMS departments. Interested residents should contact the Town Office to request an application at 207-442-7094 or email clerk@woolwich.us
