Woolwich closer to land transfer
The Woolwich select board is close to finalizing the wording for the planned transfer of property to Matt and Amy Richard of Barley Neck Road.
On Monday night, the board designated its Chairman David King Sr. or his designee to represent the town in the transaction. The board will seek the aid of a surveying company to finalize a description of the property.
Voters authorized the board to negotiate the property transfer at a June 18 special town meeting.
The 1.1-acre property off George Wright Road is listed as lot 22 on the tax map and on the east side of Nequasset Brook. The conveyance to the Richards excludes an abutting lot owned by the Bath Water District alongside the dam. At the annual town meeting in April, voters discontinued town ownership of a small bridge and gravel road here.
The board unanimously accepted an $8,579 bid from Automatic Laundry of West Newton, Massachusetts for an industrial washing machine for the fire department. Voters raised $8,000 for the purchase at the annual town meeting. The needed $579 balance will be taken from fire department budget.
Action was tabled on bids to install a new security system for the municipal building. Selectmen chose instead to stick with the current company.
The board will request the state lower the posted speed limit on Montsweag Road from 45 mph to 35 mph.
In other business, the board signed an RFP for the planned buy of a two-sided LED information sign. The sign approved by voters at the annual town meeting will be installed off Route 1 near the building housing the Woolwich Historical Society Museum.
Debbie Locke asked if a display case for historical artifacts could be placed in the town office lobby. Locke said the historical society wanted to show some of the town’s historical items including some the Grange recently donated. The board was receptive to the idea.
Road Commissioner Jack Shaw said paving this summer will include portions of Old Stage, Wolf Pond and Ferry roads.
Thomas Stoner was appointed to the Planning Board.
On King’s recommendation, the town administrator will draft a policy requiring select board approval for all non-essential department spending after June 1. Selectmen will vote on the policy at their next regular meeting.
The board will meet in executive session to continue performance evaluations at 5 p.m. Monday, July 9.
