If you have not yet had the chance to experience Boothbay Region Land Trust’s annual Apple Festival, then you have been missing out on one of our most popular events of the year. This year’s festival, on Sunday, Sept. 22 from 2 to 4 p.m., promises plenty of fun for the whole family, all free and open to the public. Taste heirloom apples grown locally in Maine, learn about cider pressing and enjoy some fresh pressed apple cider, and sit back and enjoy a specially prepared talk by local orchardist and BRLT board member Ron Ross under the tent at Oak Point Farm, 60 Samoset Road, Boothbay Harbor.

This year’s talk, entitled “As American as Apple Pie,” will delve into the fascinating and sometimes gruesome history of apple pie. Come and learn how Ramsey II, Abraham Lincoln, and Simon and Garfunkel all have a place in the history of this quintessentially American dessert. Ross will discuss not only the history of apple pie, but also some of the enduring questions that pie connoisseurs have long debated. What are the best apples to use in a pie? Is it best to blend apples or choose a single variety? What is the best wine to serve with apple pie? And is apple pie without cheese really like a kiss without a squeeze? You are sure to learn plenty in this amusing and wide-ranging exploration of one of the season’s most beloved treats.

Following the talk, guests are invited to sample 10 different heirloom variety apples supplied by Maine Heritage Orchard. Ross will provide insights on the different varieties and flavors. An apple cider press demonstration and tasting will also be available, as will tours of the orchard at Oak Point Farm. Raffle tickets will be available for many great apple-themed prizes including a professionally framed print of Andrew Wyeth’s “Wolf River,” courtesy of Fogg Art Restoration & Custom Framing; several grafted apple tress of varying varieties; an apple themed gift basket; and more! Raffle tickets are two for $5, or five for $10 and proceeds help support this free public program.
