Woolwich finalizes plan for Saturday’s annual town meeting
The Woolwich select board on Monday finalized procedures for the Saturday, Aug. 22 annual town meeting. It will be outdoors next to the municipal building. Town Clerk Anthony Blasi will call the meeting to order at 9 a.m. and John Chapman will serve as moderator.
People are being encouraged to bring their own chairs, although seating will be provided under tents. There will also be limited parking for residents who want to remain in their vehicles while taking part. They can listen to live coverage of the meeting on their radio.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, residents are encouraged to wear face masks and socially distance, and are advised not to share copies of the town report but to get their own copies.
Chair David King Sr. said some warrant articles will be bundled to save time.
Along with ordinances regulating the sale and cultivation of recreational marijuana, voters will consider making changes to ambulance billing. If those are approved, the ambulance department will begin charging patients non-transport fees of $75 after three calls in any six-month period, and $150 for on-scene care with medication. The select board can hear appeals of ambulance billing and make arrangements for payment.
Voters will also consider amending the shellfish ordinance. A copy is in the town report.
EMS Director Brian Carlton said the ambulance department is looking into grant options for a second cardiac monitor. The estimated cost of a refurbished one is $20,000, said Carlton. He noted the department had responded to 16 calls since the select board last met two weeks ago; 12 involved transports.
Code Enforcement Officer Bruce Engert reported he issued several recent building permits. He said recently there had been a good deal of plumbing activity.
Michael Sinton, Woolwich’s representative on the Bath Water District, told selectmen the district is keeping an eye on the water level of Nequasset Lake which is holding up well in spite of the prolonged dry spell. In other business, the board approved a request from Montsweag Farm Restaurant on Route 1 to expand its outdoor seating. And the town office will return to regular business hours after Sept. 8. Copies of this year’s town report are available at the town office.
