Chowder suppers continue
St. Philip’s Church on Hodge St. in Wiscasset continues to offer freshly made haddock chowder Monday nights to hungry locals and vacationers through August 20. Sittings are being scheduled for every 15 minutes from 5:30 to 6:30.
The kitchen crew will be ladling out its mouth-watering, rich haddock chowder, or vegetable soup for those who prefer it, combined with homemade corn bread or French bread. Also part of the meal will be a salad bar filled with tossed salad makings, pasta salad, potato salad, ratatouille, and three-bean salad, all made fresh each Monday morning by a dedicated crew of volunteers. A dessert table of fresh, home-baked cakes, cookies, and pies donated by the parishioners, as well as a choice of beverage, completes the menu.
The cost of the suppers is $12 for adults and $6 for children. In an effort to make the experience more pocketbook-friendly, a special family price has now been instituted: two adults and 2 children under 12 will be charged $30; it’s as if one child is eating for free!
A change in the menu being offered the young ones, should they not want chowder, is the all-time favorite, macaroni and cheese. There are also time-honored hot dogs, if preferred.
To make a reservation or to inquire about the suppers, call St. Philip’s office at 882-7814. Leave a message and a call-back number and the reservation person will be back in touch.
While waiting to be seated, or before or after taking part in the supper, people are encouraged to visit the Church’s popular Bargain Basement. There are many, many good treasures for people of all ages waiting to be snatched up at amazingly reasonable prices. The Bargain Basement’s regularly scheduled hours of operation are Tuesdays, noon to 5 p.m., and Saturdays, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., so if supper patrons run out of time, they can always return to treasure hunt then.
Another innovation this year is the addition of a short evening prayer at 5:15 in the church. People interested in a quiet contemplation or spiritual wrap-up to their day are invited to take part.
