Update: School canceled for Friday, Dec. 17, hours after Supt. Wood shares information on ‘threatening’ remarks; no credible threats seen at this time
Update: Supt. Wood released the following update Thursday evening:
“I am writing this letter to inform you that since inaccurate information has been shared on Facebook and several families are feeling that there is still a risk for their child/ren, I have decided to cancel school tomorrow, Dec. 17, 2021 for both schools. All after school activities will be canceled. Students may attend BRCTC, however, transportation will not be provided for students since it is not a school day for the Wiscasset School Department. I cannot share confidential student information but the issue has been addressed as stated previously. My greatest concern is for the safety of students and staff alike and I do not want inaccurate information to deter student attendance. We will make up the school day at the end of the school year.
“Please share this information with your child/ren to alleviate any feelings and concerns they may have. I will be addressing the staff and student body at WMHS next week regarding the impact threats have on a school department. All staff and students deserve to feel safe and we continue to work on cultivating a safe and healthy school environment in Wiscasset. Thank you again for your continued support in ensuring our students and staff are safe.
Yours in Education,
Dr. Terry L. Wood Superintendent
Original post: Wiscasset Superintendent of Schools Dr. Terry Wood released the following letter Thursday afternoon, Dec. 16:
“I am writing this letter to share some information that was brought to our attention at (Wiscasset Middle High School). There have been remarks made of a threatening nature that have been shared with students, staff, and parents. I am contacting you to reassure you that we take every and all threats seriously. We have met with law enforcement and have investigated the claims and believe that the situation has been addressed. At the same time, there seems to be a posting on TikTok referring to the same threats in schools nationwide. The authorities are investigating these threats around the state and have determined that at this time, there are no credible threats.
“With this information and at this time, we believe that there aren’t any threats to the safety and well-being of our staff and students. Please share this information with your child/ren to alleviate any feelings and concerns they may have. Please feel free to contact (WMHS Principal Charles) Lomonte (clomonte@wiscassetschools.org) or at 882-7722 if you have any further questions or concerns. Thank you again for your continued support in ensuring our students and staff are safe.
