‘NOW More Than Ever’: Women Taking Power
The Waldo Theatre is proud to announce registration for NOW More Than Ever: a day of films, conversations, learning, and opportunities for women of all ages. The goal is to create an opportunity for all who identify as women or feminists, especially youth, to gather for inspiration, information, and motivation in a relaxed and supportive environment. This will be the first annual NOW More Than Ever event to be held featuring a different theme each year. This year the event is planned for Saturday, March 25 at 9:30 a.m.
This year’s theme is “Women Taking Power.” World events and a startling wave of restrictive legislation in the US have conspired to force an examination of the meaning and effectiveness of feminine power. Together we’ll explore this dynamic topic and share ways to give and take access to avenues of power: personal and professional, public and private. Featuring the documentary “Don’t Need You” about the Riot Grrrl movement; and a screening of Amy Poehler’s film “Moxie.”
The day will also feature a panel discussion “Pathways to Power and Possibility” with author Lyn Mikel Brown of Colby College, along with representatives from Hardy Girls/Healthy Women, the High School Feminist Action Board, Olympia Snow Women’s Leadership Institute, Bowdoin College’s McKeen Center for the Common Good, and Out Maine. The panel will address who has power and how it is acquired; what girl power looks like in the 21st century, what makes mentors effective, and how we ensure that ALL women are uplifted.
Representatives from a variety of other non-profit organizations such as One Less Worry, Hearty Roots, and others will be present with opportunities to build awareness and encourage participation among those who identify as women or feminists and those who care about them. Networking opportunities will be available throughout the day, and participating organizations will be sharing information and contacts.
Registration is free for high school and college students; $30 for all others (registration is strongly encouraged in order to accommodate everyone). This is an all-day program that includes the screenings of both films, the panel discussion, and networking opportunities. Lunch will be provided for an additional charge of $15, and refreshments will be available throughout the day for a small fee, or you may bring your own (especially if you have dietary restrictions).
