Betty was born Feb. 3, 1944 in Boothbay Harbor to Fred Ardene Abbott Sr. and Frances Doty Abbott. She grew up in East Boothbay and attended local schools. She worked as a housekeeper at Smuggler’s Cove, Boothbay Harbor Inn, and at the Tugboat Inn. She also worked as a waitress at the Mariner’s Grill. She met her husband, Roger Gauthier, who was a chef at Smuggler’s Cove, where they met and fell in love. She married Roger on Oct. 1 1975. She and Roger loved each other’s company, spending time playing rummy together, planting and maintaining fruit trees in the yard and working in the family’s flower and vegetable gardens.
Betty loved her brother and best friend, Buddy. She loved to sing and dance when he was playing his guitar. She really enjoyed music in general, especially her love of Elvis and dancing.
