GENERAL SUMMARY:

The Prevention Coordinator with support from the Community Health Promotion Director works to implement substance use prevention grant specific program objectives. The goals and tasks for this project are community education, environmental enhancements at the community level for the prevention of substance misuse and harm reduction, and promoting policy and systems changes.

Frequent driving throughout Knox and Waldo Counties is required, as is less frequent travel to other locations in the state.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Under the supervision of the Community Health Promotion Director, assists in the development and implementation of the approved work plan.
Works closely with other Pen Bay Community Health Promotion (PBCHP) staff, state public health district and local partners to implement integrated and culturally appropriate substance use prevention strategies
Responsible for the recruiting and sustaining local stakeholders in PBCHP Community Partnership Meetings.
Provides public educational presentations for a variety of groups on substance use prevention topics.
Responsible for promoting the availability of PBCHP’s free resources in the community.
Builds relationships with other community sectors in Knox and Waldo Counties, including but not limited to schools, law enforcement, recovery organizations, healthcare/behavioral health providers, alcohol and cannabis retailers
Contributes to PBCHP social media under the guidance of the Community Health Promotion Director.
Responsible for meeting all reporting deadlines.
Stays current with research and best practice in substance use prevention, particularly as related to alcohol, cannabis and prescription drug misuse policy, enforcement, harm reduction, recovery supports and other environmental strategies.
Perform all other duties that may be required

SKILLS/EXPERIENCE/TRAINING REQUIRED:

Bachelor’s degree, in Public Health, Community Health Education, Health Education, Education, Behavioral Health or Social Work preferred, and 2 years’ experience in community or health education program planning, development, implementation, and evaluation. Directly related work experience may be substituted for education on a year-for-year basis.
Must obtain Provisional Prevention Specialist Certification upon employment.
Must complete educational and experience requirements and obtain the Maine Certified Prevention Specialist Certification within 18 months of employment.
Demonstrated experience in community-based initiatives, collaboration and interventions leading to policy, systems or environmental changes
Understands principals of health communication, determinants of community health, environmental strategies and building local capacity.
Possesses ability to plan, coordinate and manage with strong organizational skills; cultivate and manage key relations/stakeholders, as well as lead and facilitate group process; effectively work independently and as a part of a team
Works independently and is self-directed within the scope of a project
Ability to work with related state and/or federal agencies and to ensure project requirements are successfully attained
Related skills of good time management, managing multiple tasks, managing deadlines, and good team relationships are essential
Excellent written/verbal communication skills
Excellent command of Microsoft Office products

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Normal office environment.
Regular use of computer keyboard, requiring eye-hand coordination and finger dexterity.
Lifting of presentation equipment, laptop, screen, projector, display items – up to 20 lbs.
Travel within Knox and Waldo counties; occasional travel to other locations
